If you go into the Flip UltraHD with the right set of expectations, you’ll get pretty well what you’re expecting. This camcorder is remarkably easy to use, since you really only need to deal with two buttons: power and the big red record button. Everyone from toddler Sally to granny Gertrude can handle this thing.

Don’t expect to get anything in terms of manual controls, because they aren’t there with the exception of 2x digital zoom. Don’t expect to get breathtaking video quality, but the 720p HD video is really good for the price of the device. Build quality is good and two hours of memory is more than adequate for most purposes.

The Flip UltraHD pocket camcorder from Pure Digital is listed at $199.99.

The Good

  • Very easy to use

  • HDMI output for instant sharing

The Bad

  • Mini-HDMI cable not included
  • Total lack of manual controls
  • No optical zoom
  • FlipShare software needs more features
