The Tech Zone LAN Strap®
Since a LAN box gets moved around a lot it only makes sense to
put some kind of carrying handle on it. Originally I was going to have
AMK Services install one of their stainless steel
LAN handle to LAN 825 but upon further reflection I decided I didn't really want
a handle. So I came up with the LAN Strap®.
The main reason I didn't go with a LAN handle was I didn't like
the handle sticking up in the middle of the comp. The strap system I made uses a
pair of U bolts that sticks up just half an inch. You don't even notice it if I
remove the strap. Making the LAN Strap® is pretty simple but it did require
taking apart the computer I had built just two days ago.
You will need two small U bolts, four nuts, four lock nuts and a
strap. Mudzy and I roundup everything we needed at the local Home Hardware.

Once you remove the power supply and all the other stuff out of
the case, you're ready to begin. Start by tapping a couple starter holes to the
front and back of the case. Remember, measure twice, tap once.

Next Mudzy drilled some starter holes. Ideally you want to use a
drill press but since you really can't get a LAN case under a drill press, we
made do with a cordless drill.

Time to bring out the big drill bit. We used a 3/8" drill bit
because that was the size of the U bolts. Notice that Mudzy has one hand under
the case to catch metal filings. Notice also that the drill bit is drilling
down. I don't recommend you put your hand under a spinning drill bit. :)
